You don’t have to stray too far from home to find a school of top international caliber. Only an hour away from Cairo, you will find a unique institution fit for (and founded by) a king. King’s Academy in Madaba, Jordan — a 30-minute drive from Amman — is a co-educational boarding school welcoming male and female students at middle and secondary levels who can excel in an environment encouraging independent thought and high achievement.

This month, you don’t have to travel at all to learn more about King’s Academy. On Saturday, October 12, get answers to your questions straight from the source; representatives from the school will be holding a free information session in Cairo (see below for details).

What You’ll Find at King’s Academy

In the meantime, here’s a little background on some school strengths:

  • Talented students from over 40 countries who learn from one another’s differences and qualify to go on to leading universities worldwide.
  • Curriculum based on U.S. Advanced Placement courses (for which undergraduate credit is often awarded by colleges), along with opportunities to expand knowledge of Islamic theology and the Arab world. King’s requires that all students gain proficiency in both Arabic and English, and offers four other languages.

“Thanks to King’s Academy, Hanae is thriving. Her solid academic background and the student life at King’s have fully prepared her to work positively and efficiently with international students from all over the world.”

King’s stresses canonical approaches to the acquisition of understanding, as well as less traditional means, such as collaborative small group work, individual research, and a “portfolio” approach, in which students demonstrate their understanding through projects and activities, not just through exams.

  • Exploring options beyond the classroom is key to an integrated life. King’s co-curricular program provides students with a dozens of athletic, arts, community service, and other activities to help students explore and expand their interests, from horseback riding or hip-hop to Model United Nations, special effects makeup, mosaics creation, and many more.
  • A large, secure, and beautiful campus with 34 well-equipped modern buildings (this video provides a bird’s eye view).
  • Small classes and well-qualified faculty who often live on campus, supervising and supporting students in the school’s gender-segregated, single-room dormitories.

“Such a wonderful experience. My son spent four years here and it was amazing to see how he grew as a person and how much support and attention he received. Everyone, from the security and cook, to the professors and admin staff are amazing – it’s like one big family.”

Reem Atassi Rustom, mother of Rami Rustom ‘16

  • Need-based financial aid awarded to 50 percent of students (covering up to full costs), with additional merit-based scholarships available annually.

It’s good to be at King’s” is a tongue-in-cheek video series showing various aspects of the school, such as its academics, co-curriculars and residential life. Watch the videos on the school’s YouTube channel. Want more details? Check out the King’s Academy website.

Dreams of a King

His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of Jordan founded King’s Academy in 2007. He was inspired by his own experience attending Deerfield Academy, a top U.S. boarding school, to provide outstanding young men and women from Jordan, the Middle East and beyond with a similar educational experience unlike any available in the region.

“Throughout the Middle East there are many private schools for the children of the elite,” His Majesty King Abdullah wrote in his memoir Our Last Best Chance. “But there are no schools in the Deerfield tradition, open to all talented young people and offering scholarships for those unable to afford the fees.”

King’s is designed to address this lack, and goals for the school are high. “King’s mission is not just to prepare young men and women to succeed in life, but to develop and empower young leaders who will drive change within and beyond their communities, and eventually across borders,” His Majesty states in a welcome letter on the school’s website.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for King’s, I wouldn’t speak English if it weren’t for King’s. I wouldn’t know so much about the world that I know now if it weren’t for King’s. All of that wouldn’t have happened if there wasn’t financial support for me at King’s Academy.”
