For a decade, the Yousriya Loza–Sawiris Scholarship has been transforming the careers of Egypt’s most promising professionals in the development field in Egypt. Established in 2015 by the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development  in partnership with the Hubert Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, the scholarship equips Egyptians with the education and global exposure they need to drive sustainable development at home.

Through the Master of Development Practice program—ranked among the top public affairs programs in the United States—students gain the interdisciplinary knowledge and hands-on experience needed to address the complex challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, and social justice.

Each year, two outstanding Egyptian scholars are selected through a competitive process to receive partial funding that covers:

  • Tuition for three out of four semesters
  • Living and travel expenses
  • Health insurance
  • A summer field experience in a developing country

In return, scholars commit to completing a capstone project focused on Egypt and to working in the country for at least two years after graduation—bringing their global learning back to serve local communities.

Since its launch, the program has produced 15 graduates and 2 current students, many of whom now hold influential roles in various fields including international development, consulting, policy, and sustainability. Together, they represent a growing network of leaders driving Egypt’s social and economic
